THE ANTI-HERO: Hermann Goering or Göring, if you speak German.

    I recently did a piece about ALS (The Lou Gehrig disease) and while searching the files for a photo of one of the greatest baseball players of all time, I chanced upon the photo above of the second-in command of the Nazi party in Germany. I was surprised by the unfortunate physical resemblance of Goering and our President. Same corpulent body shape, same imperious manner and narcissism.

    There is a major difference. Goering, like Hitler, hated Jews, blaming them for helping bring about the downfall of Germany in the first World War, whereas Trump is a supporter of Israel.

    As has been noted, Donald Trump made not just one, but a stunning series of remarks in recent years about his father being born in a wonderful place in Germany. When it was pointed out that Fred Trump was born in New York, not once did Donald correct himself.

    Of all of the things DJT has said about himself, to me, this is the most disquieting.

    Why? Because Trump had to know he was lying, and knew he was bound to be called out for it. He just didn't care. The only reason I can think for him doing it was hoping to impress a few Germans, who didn't know better. 

    Anyway, after all is said and done, it's what one contributes to the benefit or harm to others during the short span of years we are given, is what counts.

    I've been thinking of doing a piece about anti-heroes and if there ever was one, Goering certainly was. A German flying ace in the first World War, Hermann Goering was one of the earliest supporters  of Adolph Hitler. Goering was one of those wounded in the "Beer Hall Putsch," a failed coup d'etat led by Hitler to overthrow the post-World War I German government.

    Hitler repaid Goering by elevating him to the rank of Reichsmarschall or head of all German armed forces toward the end of WWII. 

    No one, unless it was Hitler, inflicted more suffering on more humans than did Goering. It began with his heading the Blitz of Great Britain and ended with 60-million dead as a result of World War Two. He was found to be directly culpable in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of victims. He was recorded as having told members of a squad of S.S. (Schutzstaffel) executioners, "Shoot first and ask questions later. No matter what happens, I will protect you."

    Following the trial where a death sentence was handed down by an Allied war crimes tribunal, on October 15, 1946 Goering beat the hangman by swallowing a cyanide pill that had been surgically implanted under his skin prior to the German capitulation.

    In due course, American armed forces found that Goering had secreted hundreds of millions (perhaps billions) of dollars worth of art and bullion in a cave, all expropriated illegally from Jewish estates and Allied properties during the war.

     To everything espoused by the Nazi's, we must always continue to vow NEVER AGAIN!

     Just remember this: If you speak like a Nazi and you march like a Nazi and you act like a Nazi...you're a Nazi, no matter what the mob of cheering people behind you wearing those red caps say.
