WE GIVE THANKS

A Thanksgiving Toast
My fellow and female Americans: Please Join me in thanking God.   We are citizens of the greatest nation on this planet - as President Abraham Lincoln could just as well have put it "Conceived in Liberty and dedicated to the purpose that all of us, whether by birth or by pledging allegiance to a unique document, declare that thenceforth we all were to be citizens of the United States of America, forever free of despots".  I rush to add three words: "foreign or domestic."

I often think about that small group of men who, in 1776. risked all that they had, certainly their very lives, by signing a declaration that the signers themselves, and those who would join them in this unique experiment, were no longer colonists and subjects of a king.

No King for Us
George Washington, our first President, refused even the notion that he, or any other person, should be king.

   Perish the thought.

-Phil Richardson, Storyteller and Observer of the Human Condition
