SPECIAL: THE CIA TORTURE CHAMBERS     December 10, 2014

Immoral, Illegal, ineffective. Certainly not "American Values." What more can be said about the details of the bestial torture of enemies of the United States, other than that these extra-legal acts were approved or ordered by the highest officials of the George W. Bush administration—ostensibly defended by the need for expediency and in the name of National Security?

Did the recruitment of tens of thousands of Islamist terrorists these acts brought about serve us well in that regard?

One can not help wonder what part vengeance played.  Are we any better than the cut-throats of the Islamic State?

Are we not a nation of laws?  It is my understanding that persons attempted to draft a document that would attempt to give a veil of legality to the use of extended torture, even unto death, that took place with certain individuals. This was finally recognized as a cover-up, and retracted.

We can take no satisfaction in knowing that little benefit resulted from these depraved acts. Instead, we need to recognize that despite intentions, every American was forever tarred.

There were some brave individuals within the CIA who refused to take part and undoubtedly sacrificed their careers as a result. We need to honor these persons.

At the very least, we need to identify those who controlled the levers of power at the time and condemn them publicly for besmirching our birthright.
