SHORT TAKES

Whether Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is ever found or not, future writers have been supplied grist for the mill of future speculation for decades, if not hundreds of years. One aspect that keeps gnawing at me: who were the two persons on board with stolen passports? One might be an odd coincidence, but two out of 227 smacks of conspiracy to me.

Not only do I not recognize the songs presented on the Country Music Hall of Fame, I now no longer know the names of those who are singing them.

How come the Polish gene pool is so heavily weighted with ectomorphs - the body type of seven foot kids, who are built closer to the basketball hoop? Blame it on the pierogi, crescent shaped parcels filled with good stuff or kapusta, more ways to serve cabbage than you can imagine.

So now you've gone to see the film "Noah" and left wondering why The Bible (any translation) told such a sparse version of events? I haven't seen it yet, but I've read it's a combination of "The Perfect Storm" meets "Animal Kingdom," with a little bit of the cable hit, "Game of Thrones" thrown in for good measure. Sorry. no chariot races. Those came much later, I think.

Friends and family know that I am not a "game" person, having been taught at some relatively painful expense, the rudiments of Blackjack in the bowels of a troop ship. So when I began to hear late-night comedians making jibes about something called "Candy Crush Saga," I thought it was a new soft drink. (Really). Last week I learned that the Irish company that had "written" the software to the "newest big thing," had almost two billion dollars in sales last year. Since I don't own one of the super smart phones (Mine is a 1-G model, used to make voice telephone calls), I've no fear of being captivated by arranging icons in some sort of electronic Rubik's Cube. I never mastered that either.
